New F-1 visa rule 2026 explained in Tamil: international students will move from open-ended “Duration of Status” to a fixed period of admission, making the I-94 expiration date more important than ever.

Scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026, the final rule introduces a maximum admission period of generally four years at a time, new USCIS extension-of-stay requirements, tighter academic-progression rules and a shorter 30-day post-completion grace period for students under the new framework.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATIONS:

This is not a four-year lifetime limit on studying in America. Students who legitimately require additional time may apply for an extension of stay.

However, extending the I-20 through the university may no longer be sufficient by itself. USCIS may also need to approve the student’s additional immigration stay.

For students under the new fixed-admission framework, the post-completion grace period generally falls from 60 days to 30 days. Existing students protected by the transition provisions may retain the current 60-day period and certain temporary OPT protections.

The rule does not eliminate OPT, STEM OPT, CPT or the existing H-1B cap-gap mechanism. However, the new fixed-admission and extension requirements can affect how these pathways are managed.

The rule is currently scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026. DHS states that it will publish another Federal Register notice if congressional review changes the effective date or terminates the rule.
